This form of the rite of Christian initiation is intended for children, not baptized as infants or who are baptized but have not received any formal catechesis, who have attained the use of reason (age 7 +) and are of catechetical age (up to 12 years old).
They seek Christian initiation either at the direction of their parents or guardians or, with parental permissions, on their own initiative. Such children are capable of receiving and nurturing a personal faith and of recognizing an obligation in conscience. But they cannot yet be treated as adults because, at this stage of their lives, they are dependent on their parents or guardians and are still strongly influenced by their companions and their social surroundings.
Children beginning this process are placed into regular Religious Education classes with their peers every Saturday morning. The program takes two full years. During the first year these children will complete the Rite of Acceptance during a Sunday Mass - Palm Sunday. During their second year they will continue into regular Religious Education classes with their peers every Saturday morning, and a proper formation for the Sacraments of Initiation will be provided.
All candidates who are ready and prepared will receive the sacraments of BAPTISM, EUCHARIST and CONFIRMATION at the Easter Vigil, if they follow the two full year program.
Enrollment for RCIC occurs simultaneously with the enrollment for Religious Education classes.
Regular attendance at Mass and Religious Education classes.
All children need a sponsor who is an active member in the Catholic Church who will be able to be present at the Easter Vigil. There will be various activities for the sponsor and child to complete together throughout the year. If the family is unable to find a sponsor for the child, we will help find a good match in the parish. Please check the requirements for all sponsors and/or godparents: Sponsor/Godparents Requirements
Yes! In many cases when a family is joining the church together, there is more than one child involved. It is highly encouraged to enroll all children at the same time.
